| John Greenwood
was born in Boston in 1760. He was the second son of Isaac and Mary
Greenwood. He attended the North Writing School until he was thirteen years
old. At that time he was sent to Portland, Maine to live with his uncle and
learn cabinet making.
He stayed with his uncle for two years. In
1775, John became concerned about his family. There was much unrest in the
colonies at that time. The British troops were in Boston. John feared
that the British would kill his parents. He decided to walk home to Boston, a
distance of 150 miles.
John Greenwood served in the rebel army from 1775
until 1776. During the years 1777 and 1778, Greenwood worked as a
fisherman. He re-enlisted in the army in 1778 and served until 1779. He
then joined the navy and served until 1783, (continued.) |
