
Guided Tours
A visit to the National Museum of Dentistry is a fascinating, fun, smile-inspiring experience where students learn the important role oral health plays in a healthy life. Hands-on programs and interactive exhibits offer educational activities that meet national education standards in health, science, social studies, and language arts. Tours last approximately one hour.

PRESCHOOL
Give preschool children a head start on a happy mouth with a guided tour tailored to their cognitive development. Practice brushing on a giant mouth, learn about good food choices and healthy eating, and dress up like a dentist and give your “patient” a checkup in a kid-size dental office. Read a story about visiting the dentist and sing songs about healthy habits for a sparkling smile. This program meets requirements for the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework and the Maryland Model for School Readiness (MMSR).
K—5TH GRADE
Fabulous and Famous Teeth
See amazing teeth feats, enter Mouthie’s hands-on laboratory to discover how to keep your smile sparkling, and come tooth-to-tooth with George Washington’s not-so-wooden teeth to see how our first president handled losing his choppers. This engaging, interactive tour takes students throughout the museum to explore why we have teeth, why they are important, and how to take care of them. Standards met for Health, Science,Social Studies and Language Arts.
4TH—12TH GRADE
Your Spitting Image
Step into the role of a forensics investigator and discover how to identify gender and ethnicity from skulls and analyze x-rays to make identifications. Learn how DNA in saliva is changing the way we detect disease, and see how scientists are growing replacement teeth from adult stem cells. Grades 4-8 will also visit The Marvelous Mouth to discover the world of braces. Standards met for Health, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
This tour teaches kids with special needs how to take care of their teeth, giving them life skills they need to be healthy adults. See amazing teeth feats and George Washington’s not-so-wooden teeth, practice oral hygiene skills and role play a visit to a dental office. Tour the museum to discover why we have teeth, why they are important, and how to take care of them. Tours can be tailored to meet specific class needs. Private tours can be arranged on Tuesdays to offer a quiet, comfortable environment for students.
Fees:
- $2 per student
- 1 chaperone per 10 students free; additional adults $2 each
- Teachers free
Guided tours are available Wednesday-Friday at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m.
Tours accommodate a minimum of 10 students and a maximum of 80 students.

Self-Guided Tours
Teachers are welcome to lead self-guided tours with their classes. NMD provides gallery maps and teacher packets that include pre- and post-visit classroom activities and on-site gallery activity sheets. Spend as little or as much time as you want–at your own pace and in your own way.

See amazing teeth feats, marvel at animals and their teeth, and trace the fascinating history of dentistry from the ancient Egyptians to today. Standards met for Health, Science and Social Studies.
George Washington Gallery
Step into an 18th-century presidential parlor to see Washington’s ivory denture and portraits that reveal the impact of his tooth troubles. Standards met for Social Studies.
MouthPower
Role play a visit to the dentist in this interactive learning laboratory. Practice brushing and flossing on a larger-than-life mouth, explore healthy eating, and see how tobacco harms your teeth. Standards met for Health and Science.
The Marvelous Mouth
Discover the wide world of braces, mouthguards, and dangers to the mouth with hands-on models and an animated computer game. Standards met for Health, Science and Social Studies.
